Nokia Bell Labs, TechUnited event takes ‘NJ to the Moon’

This week, TechUnited:NJ and Nokia Bell Labs collaborated on an event at the iconic company’s Murray Hill campus.

On Dec. 2, NJ to the Moon, highlighted cutting-edge advancements in space technology and innovation, including Nokia’s efforts to deploy the first cellular network on the moon.

“This initiative is not just about connectivity; it’s about enabling a new era of space exploration and creating opportunities for innovation both in space and on Earth,” said Thierry Klein, president of Solutions Research, during a fireside chat with TechUnited:NJ CEO Aaron Price.

The project continues the legacy of groundbreaking research and innovation for Nokia Bell Labs – pushing the boundaries of technology as it aims to revolutionize space communication.

Klein emphasized its potential to facilitate scientific research, resource exploration as well as even future human settlement on the moon.

“We are taking the same technologies that you and I use every day in our daily lives and bringing them to bear on future space, lunar, and Martian economies,” said Klein.

Space research startups weigh in

The event also featured presentations from three startups working in the field:

  • SpaceFactory (winner of Audience Choice Award) – discussed its advancements in additive manufacturing and construction using lunar regolith
  • Falcon Spacepresented research on advanced propulsion systems aimed at revolutionizing space travel
  • OrbitBeyond shared insights into its lunar transportation and exploration initiatives, including plans for a sample return mission

 

NJ to the Moon offered the opportunity to bring together entrepreneurs, innovators, investors and industry leaders. Additionally, the event showcased how New Jersey is at the forefront of space innovation, with key anchors like Nokia Bell Labs, partners like :NJ and local startups leading the charge.

Price stressed his organization is committed to empowering and supporting the innovation community.

“We’re built to empower entrepreneurs, innovators, and instigators around the region to build a better future for all,” he said.
