Quest Diagnostics is partnering with United Health Group’s technology-based health services system, Optum.Quest is banking on Optum’s data-crunching capabilities and other services to digitize customer orders and increase use of diagnostic information services, such as data analytics, population health insights and connectivity solutions, according to a statement from Madison-based Quest.
Quest’s revenue services operations will become part of Optum360, a revenue management tool for health care providers, to help reduce the cost and complexity of the billing process.
“This partnership expands on Optum’s commitment to bring uniquely effective solutions to all segments of the health care marketplace and collaborate in ways that ultimately deliver better experiences and care for patients,” Larry Renfro, CEO of Optum, said in a statement. “Quest Diagnostics’ proven laboratory expertise and organizational capabilities make Quest an ideal partner.”
In addition, the partnership will allow Optum access to Quest’s biometric screening services for employers and health plans.
“Quest is excited to partner with Optum in what both companies view as the start of a long-term relationship. Optum’s investments and technology tools and services, combined with Quest’s own deep lab industry expertise, will improve the patient experience by reducing complexity in the health care billing process, improving access to quality diagnostic information services. This alliance advances Quest’s top strategic priorities to accelerate growth and drive operational efficiencies,” said Steve Rusckowski, CEO and president of Quest.
Optum and Quest are both focused on moving from paper to electronic billing, as well as helping grow transparency and reduce costs for customers, according to Quest spokesman Dennis Moynihan.
“Quest processes half a million requisitions, or test orders, per day and has a mature operating model for high-volume/low-dollar claims. Quest is seeking to further improve the high degree of automation currently used in its operations and streamline processes,” Moynihan said.
The move strengthens the relationship between Quest and United Health Group, since Quest has “provided in-network coverage for (insurer UnitedHealthcare) on a regional basis for many years.”
