Quinnipiac University released a new national April 9 that takes the temperature of voters on a number of hot-button issues.

Among respondents, 41% approve of the way President Donald Trump is handling his job as president, versus 53% who disapprove.

Of course, that data range hit into the heart of the president’s tariff announcement, which has seen a whipsaw of developments leading to Wednesday’s pause of most reciprocal tariffs. That reversal came after the poll was taken. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,407 self-identified registered voters from April 3-7 (+/- 2.6% margin of error).

What worries voters the most right now?Key findings in the poll include:

  • 72% think will hurt the economy in the short-term – 22% think tariffs will help the economy
  • 53% believe tariffs will hurt the economy long-term – 41% believe they will help in the long-term
  • Top economic worries
    • 47% food and consumer goods
    • 20% cost of housing or rent
    • 17% stock market
    • 6% job situation
  • Big buys
    • 29% have put off buying big items because of current economic conditions
    • 6% bought big items sooner than they otherwise would have
    • 60% say current economic conditions have not changed their purchasing choices
  • On the economy, Trump received 40% approval – 55% disapprove
  • On trade, Trump received 39% approval – 55% disapproval
  • 57% believe that Elon Musk has too much power – while 33% think he has the right amount of power, and 5% think he has too little power

“A large majority of voters acknowledge the tariffs are delivering a bruising body blow to the economy in the near term,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy. “In a rare moment of political unanimity, Democrats, Republicans, and independents in equal numbers worry most about the prices of what they eat and what they buy.”
