In a nod to the Garden State’s rich diner legacy, the Somerset Patriots Minor League Baseball team unveiled its alternate identity beginning next season — the Jersey Diners.
The Patriots say they selected the name and designed the logos – created by Ryan Foose of Fooser Sports Designs – to honor the state’s diner history while reflecting the classic eatery’s feel. The logos include a coffee cup mascot, “Jersey Diners” in bright neon coloring, a tribute to the outside of an old-fashioned diner, and more.
The Yankees Double-A affiliate will play as the Jersey Diners for three games this season (June 8, July 26 and Aug. 11) at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater. The team says the events will feature diner music, blue plate specials at the concession stands, diner-themed promotions and more.
“We are excited to rebrand as the Jersey Diners for a few games this season,” said Patrick McVerry, president/general manager, Somerset Patriots. “Diners are such a special part of the DNA of New Jersey. When we decided to move forward with our first full rebrand, it made a lot of sense to do something that resonates with so many people throughout our state. Playing as the Jersey Diners is a true representation of this area and identity we feel everyone will want to get behind.”
“Alternate identities are one of the great things about Minor League Baseball. It gives us the opportunity to have fun and be creative while celebrating our community,” said Patriots co-Chairman Jonathan Kalafer. “Diners are a special part of New Jersey culture and resonate with the Somerset Patriots on a lot of levels. They too are family businesses that are often a setting for family and friends to spend time together. They also tend to build their business on customer service and value.”

And, to really bring the whole Jersey feel of the story together, the Jersey Diners are presented by The Taylor Provisions Co., the iconic brand founded in the Garden State by John Taylor in 1856, which produces the infamous Taylor Pork Roll – a diner staple as well as ground zero for the longstanding Taylor Ham vs. pork roll debate here in Jersey.
Gov. Phil Murphy sent a letter to the team to mark the rebrand.
“New Jersey prides itself on being known as the ‘Diner Capital of the World,’” Murphy wrote. “As governor, I commend the Somerset Patriots for recognizing the importance of diners in the Garden State, and I thank all who continue to support these local family-owned businesses.”
