As part of an effort to improve its performance, plans to close three dozen underperforming stores in the Northeast by November. The move includes 10 New Jersey locations.

In addition to the Garden State, the Ahold Delhaize-owned chain plans to shutter eight stores in Massachusetts, seven stores in New York, five stores in Connecticut and two stores in Rhode Island, according to a July 12 press release.

Following the closures, Stop & Shop will operate more than 350 stores spanning five states, including 81 stores in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York and 25 in Rhode Island.

According to Stop & Shop, employees at affected stores will receive other job offers within the company.

Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a statement, “Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities.”

“Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” he said.

In May, Ahold Delhaize said it planned to close an unspecified number of Stop & Shop locations to help strengthen the brand. The company also said it wants to build new stores and remodel remaining ones as well as increase the number of store-brand products offered and reduce prices.

The New Jersey sites scheduled to close are:

  • 1083 Inman Ave., Edison
  • 1049 U.S. Highway 1 S., Edison
  • 4861 U.S. Highway 9, Howell
  • 1278 U.S. Highway 22, Phillipsburg
  • 581 Stelton Road, Piscataway
  • 625 Paterson Ave., Carlstadt
  • 1221 State Route 27, Franklin Township
  • 130 Skyline Drive, Ringwood
  • 505 Richmond Ave., Point Pleasant Beach
  • 2275 W. County Line Road, Jackson

Stop & Shop plans to share specific closing dates with local customers in advance of the final day of business, the press release said.

Reid commented, “Stop & Shop is focused on growing through large, multi-year price investments and a stronger customer value proposition, both in-store and online. This means we’ll be focused on delivering lower everyday prices, as well as even more savings for our customers through strong promotions.”

Since starting a remodeling program in 2018, the grocer has refreshed more than 190 locations — half its current store count. Stop & Shop noted that these stores outperform ones that aren’t updated.

The chain also opened its new Boston flagship last month. Located in the city’s Allston Yards development, it replaces an older store across the street.

Reid said, “We look forward to continuing to serve and care for our communities and to grow Stop & Shop as a local brand for many years to come.”
