On three upcoming Sundays, sections of Ferry and Market streets will close to traffic to allow for expanded al fresco eating.

Gov. Phil Murphy visited Vesta Wood-Fired in East Rutherford to sign legislation that continues authorizations for restaurants, bars, distilleries and breweries that were enacted during the pandemic to aid the industry.

“In 2015, we had the vision to maximize this space by creating a pedestrian-friendly plaza and establishing a sought-after shopping and dining destination and overall economic driver that that has since exceeded our expectations,” Mayor Steven Fulop said July 11. “Today’s ribbon-cutting is the final piece to accomplishing a permanent, community-driven pedestrian mall that boosts local business, attracts investment, and most importantly, establishes a premier location to foster community ..."

When indoor dining was limited to 25% capacity during the cooler months many switched to offering outdoor dining and services. But because of colder weather they shelled out thousands of dollars on tents, snow removal, igloos and space heaters.
