Villa Marie Claire receives 3M for palliative care study

Villa Marie Claire hospice, a palliative care facility operated by Holy Name Medical Center, received a $3 million appropriation from the state to continue its work to create an end-of-life care model for the state.
The appropriation is the result of legislation introduced by state Senator Paul Sarlo, D-36th District, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, D-37th District, and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, D-38th District. Gov. Phil Murphy signed it into law on July 3.
Funding will support Villa Marie Claire’s key initiatives addressing care in the two years leading up to a person’s death and the 12 months following a person’s death.
“This funding supports the full spectrum of end-of-life care, encompassing the patient, family, caregiver, provider and community,” said Michael Maron, Holy Name’s CEO. “Creating a standard for the appropriate use of end-of-life-care resources will result in a reduction in state and federal costs stemming from unnecessary hospital admissions, ER visits, procedures, tests, and treatment.”
