Volta Industries Inc. installed electric vehicle charging stations at five Stop & Shop locations in the Northeast, including two in New Jersey.
The installations were announced July 27 and include Stop & Shops in Morris Plains and East Brunswick.
The grocer expects to launch 50 additional Volta charging stations across the Northeast by the end of the year.
Customers with electric vehicles can park in the designated spaces and charge while they shop. According to Volta, its stations charge at a rate of up to 30 miles of range per hour.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Volta Charging and offer our customers the benefit of electric vehicle charging at no cost,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop in a prepared statement. “Providing this convenience allows us to do more than make things easier for our customers; it allows us to also make things better for the environment.”
The partnership with Volta isn’t Stop & Shop’s only clean transportation initiative. Through the retailer’s Restore program, every time someone fills their gas tank at a Stop & Shop Fuel station, a tree is planted to offset emissions.
According to an announcement, more than 130,000 metric tons of carbon and over 255 million gallons of fuel have been offset, and more than 59,200 new trees have been planted, since the start of the Restore program.
A representative for Stop & Shop did not return a request for information on which of the 50 upcoming charging stations will be in New Jersey
