Wells Fargo and Operation HOPE Inc. are continuing their effort to make financial education and guidance more accessible with the opening of four more HOPE Inside centers around the country, including one in Newark.

Located within the Newark Lincoln Park branch at 1040 Broad St., just outside the Central Business District neighborhood, the HOPE Inside center features a financial professional offering free education workshops and one-on-one coaching, Wells Fargo announced May 31.

Lead communications consultant for the bank, Jacqueline Hlavenka-Sansone, told NJBIZ that walk-ins are welcome; however, appointments are encouraged. The Newark HOPE Inside coach will serve up to five branches through a hub-and-spoke model later in the program, she added.

“Working with Operation HOPE is one important way that we can help remove barriers to financial inclusion and empower people with education, resources and tools to manage their money, improve their credit and achieve their financial goals,” Darlene Goins, head of Wells Fargo’s Banking Inclusion Initiative, said in a statement. “It’s exciting to see this collaboration grow and make a great impact in even more communities.”

John Hope Bryant, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE Inc., called the centers “a welcoming space” that are “a significant step forward in addressing barriers to financial wealth in diverse communities.”

Operation HOPE is a national nonprofit dedicated to financial empowerment for underserved communities.

Wells Fargo, headquartered in San Francisco, said its goal is to open HOPE Inside centers in 20 low- to moderate income (LMI) communities serving 100 branches by the end of 2023. The two organizations have recently opened new centers in Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Gallup, N.M.

Hlavenka-Sansone also told NJBIZ that the program is now live in 10 markets, including more centers in Atlanta (two locations), Houston, Oakland, Los Angeles and Phoenix.

HOPE Inside is part of Wells Fargo’s Banking Inclusion Initiative to help those who are unbanked gain access to mainstream banking products and to help remove barriers to financial inclusion for Black and African American, Hispanic and Native American/Alaska Native households, which, according to the bank, account for more than half of unbanked households in the U.S.

The announcement follows Wells Fargo’s March news that it expanded its closing-cost credit to 13 more counties in New Jersey, part of the Dream. Plan. Home. program, which offers a closing cost credit of up to $5,000 for LMI homebuyers.

According to its website, Wells Fargo operates 226 banks and 412 ATMs in New Jersey.
