Health care watchdog The Leapfrog Group released the fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade Nov. 10, assigning a letter grade to nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide based on their prevention of medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections that kill or harm patients.
New Jersey ranked No. 9 in terms of states with the most As. New Jersey’s hospitals received more A grades than it did B or C grades. Only two hospitals received D grades, and no hospital received an F.
Across all states, 32% of hospitals received an A grade, 26% received a B, 35% received a C, 7% received a D, and less than 1% received an F.
Leapfrog rates its largest number of hospitals ever in its 2021 report, and the grades reflect performance on more than 30 evidence‐based measures of safety, including for the first time, post‐operative sepsis, blood leakage, and falls causing hip injury.
Sepsis, including post‐operative sepsis, kills over 270,000 people a year and is the costliest condition in U.S. hospitals.
“As the pandemic continues, we all have heightened awareness of the importance of hospitals in our communities and in our lives,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It is critical that all hospitals put patient safety first. Now we have more information on more hospitals than ever before, so people can protect themselves and their families.”
