SVP of Business Development, AVE;
President, NJRC
What leadership traits have served you well?
I learn by doing, so as a leader, I am big on leading by example. Sharing my why more than my how and doing the daily actions it takes to be successful with them so we can learn from each other.
What is one quote or phrase you refer to when you need a pick me up or inspiration?
“There is no growth without discomfort.” In a business development role, you have to put yourself in situations to win, which can be uncomfortable at times. Whether it’s making the initial call, the follow-up call or attending an event where you don’t know anybody. Be confident but humble, we are all human and can learn something from everybody. Most important have fun with it and know it is okay to be uncom-fortable and to make mistakes. This is how we learn and grow professionally and personally.
What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Build your network, get involved in a professional organization. Find an organization that you feel passionate about that aligns with your professional aspirations, and really get involved. That was NJRC for me. I’ve been an active member for at least 15 years. I’ve held every role and been involved in every as-pect of NJRC from Treasurer to Secretary to VP and now President. Start by volunteering with the small stuff. Learn every aspect of the organization and authentically build relationships. It’s important with any-thing in life – you can’t just show up and expect to be seen.
What valuable career lesson or lessons would you like to share with others?
Choose wisely with your circle – professionally and personally. I feel strongly about surrounding myself with people who are positive, who challenge me, and that I trust. I feel fortunate to have collaborated with such strong female leaders who I respect and admire at AVE – one of them being our COO and Brand President Lea Anne Welsh who has led AVE to the national growth that we’re seeing now. She has always listened to me and challenged me in the right ways over my career. But she also has a strong vision for AVE, and it’s one I believe in. You perform best when you’re happy and believe in what you’re doing.
