Following the death of Daniel Katz, chairman and chief executive officer of Allegiance Retail Services LLC, the Iselin-based supermarket co-op’s board of directors named Lou Scaduto Jr. as his successor.
In a Nov. 9 announcement, Allegiance did not disclose any details regarding Katz’s death, but said his family is finalizing details to create a foundation to honor him and that the information on how to contribute will soon be posted on its website.
After taking on the roles of chairman and chief executive officer in 2019, Katz led Allegiance through critical transformational periods and was instrumental in solidifying strategic supply agreements, the company said.
Along with his brother Noah, Katz also was co-president of PSK Operating LLC, a longtime member of the Allegiance and Foodtown organizations and owner and operator of 13 supermarkets in New York under the Foodtown, Freshtown and Pathmark banners.
Overall, Allegiance’s retail network spans more than 100 supermarkets in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania under the banners of Foodtown, Freshtown Marketplace, D’Agostino, Gristedes, Pathmark, LaBella Marketplace, Brooklyn Harvest Market, Market Fresh, Big Deal Food Market, Green Way Markets, Food Basics and Shop ‘n Bag.

Scaduto
Allegiance’s president and chief operating officer John Derderian said, “This is a profound loss. The strength of Dan’s leadership, wisdom and insight can be seen in the confidence with which our co-op members operate. Dan believed in family – his own, his PSK family and that of our cooperative members. He continually looked for ways to strengthen bonds and to serve the best interests of the co-op.”
Scaduto, president of Food Circus Supermarkets, was elected to serve as chairman and chief executive officer during a special board meeting after Katz’s passing, according to Allegiance.
“Dan’s contribution to Allegiance as both an Operating Member and CEO & Chairman, can be characterized in one word – outstanding,” stated Scaduto. “His commitment to, and vision for the cooperative was inspiring.”
