  • Original storefront was destroyed in a 2024 fire
  • Location includes expanded retail, production space
  • Family business now led by founder’s sons

Zadies Bake Shop is returning to Fair Lawn in a brand-new space. The debut comes after a fire destroyed its previous storefront nearly two years ago.

The family-owned recently celebrated the grand opening of a 3,233-square-foot production and retail site at , according to property owner Garden Commercial.

The late Larry Steinberg founded Zadies in 2005. The bakery is known for its challah, rugelach, babka, bell cakes and other specialty items. It also has a successful wholesale business serving supermarkets, kosher markets as well as caterers with a variety of baked goods.

Zadies’ original spot along Fair Lawn Avenue sustained damage in a July 2024 strip mall fire. Authorities said the blaze reportedly began in a neighboring restaurant before spreading through the building.

Following the incident, Zadies relied on its wholesale operation to keep the business going while planning a larger retail location, Patch reported.

However, just days after unveiling its spot at Fair Lawn Promenade, Steinberg passed away at the age of 74, according to the Daily Voice. His sons Josh, Adam and Ethan, now operate Zadies.

“We are thrilled to welcome customers back to Zadies. Our new space has allowed us to expand our offerings, from cookies, babkas and cupcakes to artisanal and rye breads, challahs and an enhanced dairy line,” Adam Steinberg said. “We are grateful for the support we’ve received and look forward to serving the community with the fresh, high-quality baked goods that have always been at the heart of our business.”

‘A cornerstone of our community’

During a recent grand-reopening ceremony, community members as well as local leaders joined the Steinbergs in celebrating the bakery’s return.

U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-5th District, shared, “Zadies is more than a bakery with incredible pastries, challah, cakes — it’s a cornerstone of our community. After the devastating fire, North Jersey came together to support the Steinberg family, and today we celebrate their resilience, perseverance, and incredible comeback.”
