Westfield Garden State Plaza took a giant leap toward the future April 29, kicking off construction that will transform the Paramus shopping mall into a vibrant mixed-used community.
Phase 1 of the project will introduce a walkable town center to the Bergen County mainstay, centered on a 1-acre public green connecting the existing building to 575 new luxury rental units. Currently a parking lot, surrounded by active construction in the background, the ceremony took place on the future site of that central space.
NJBIZ joined executives from Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, the mall’s owner; partner Mill Creek Residential; local officials; and others as they marked the milestone of one of the nation’s most successful shopping centers.
“Westfield purchased this in 1996, 30 years ago,” Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Chief Operating Officer Dominic Lowe said. “Thirty years, we’ve been a proud custodian of this piece of amazing real estate. And we’ve continued to invest in it in many, many years, but this feels different. This feels very, very different.”
