Amazon Fresh will open its first New Jersey store this summer in Paramus, a spokesperson confirmed to NJBIZ on May 24.
While an opening date isn’t set yet, the representative shared that the store will feature Amazon’s Just Walk Out frictionless payment system, where customers scan the app upon entering the store and go about their business picking up items, putting them in a basket or in bags, and replacing whatever they don’t want. They just walk out when they’re finished without needing to check out thanks to computer vision, sensors and artificial intelligence.
Amazon Fresh replaces what up until May 2020 was a Fairway Market store at 30 E. Ridgewood Ave. Fairway Market filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy early on in the COVID-19 pandemic and in March 2020 sold its Paramus and Woodland Park locations to Amazon for $1.5 million.
The digital-native retailer will hire hundreds of employees, according to Paramus store manager Chris Boje. Jobs will pay $15 to $16.50 per hour, depending on the role.
“We’re thrilled that Amazon is opening its first Amazon Fresh store in New Jersey in Paramus,” said Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera. “Not only will this new store provide fresh, low-priced groceries for shoppers in the area, but Amazon is also creating hundreds of jobs with good pay and benefits locally.”
Amazon Fresh is hosting an in-person hiring event for the Paramus location on June 8 and June 9 at the Marriott Saddle Brook in Saddle Brook. Interested candidates can also apply online.
