Need a boost for your community environmental project? New Jersey American Water wants to hear from you.

The Camden-based utility is accepting applications for its 2023 Environmental Grant Program.

“At American Water, we are all responsible for protecting our nation’s water and watersheds, and this program is just one way we help our communities engage in this vital effort,” Lynda DiMenna, American Water’s chief environmental and safety officer, said in a statement.

American Water, also based in Camden and the parent company of NJAW, is extending the program to 11 other states, as well.

To qualify in New Jersey, a proposed project must:

  • Be located within New Jersey American Water’s service area;
  • Address a source water or watershed protection in the community;
  • Be completed between May and November of 2023;
  • Be a new initiative or significantly expand upon an existing program;
  • Be carried out by a formal or informal partnership between two or more organizations;
  • Provide evidence of sustainability.

The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023. Salaries and compensation for support of a project or program are ineligible for the grant, the company said.

Launched in 2009, the program offers funds for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and groundwater supplies in local communities.

In 2022, New Jersey American Water granted five awards totaling more than $40,000.
