Walmart is reportedly cutting hundreds of corporate jobs across the U.S. in addition to asking most remote workers to return to offices.

The majority of affected employees are remote workers and those based in smaller officers in a Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto. They’ve been asked to relocate to the retail giant’s Bentonville, Ark., headquarters. However, some will be able to work from hubs in Hoboken or the San Fransisco Bay area, The Wall Street Journal reported.

will still allow corporate staff to work remotely part of the time as long as they are in offices for most of the time, according to WSJ.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that remote workers have until July 1 to make a decision about relocating. Those who choose to leave will receive two weeks pay for every year that they worked at Walmart as severance, Reuters reported.

A media representative for Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Changing business

Walmart is the nation’s largest private employer. The retailer has about 1.6 million employees, the majority of whom work at its 4,600 stores across the country.

In a memo sent to employees and obtained by WSJ, Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris said the return-to-office initiative aims to boost collaboration, help with associate development and strengthen company culture.

The memo did not give a reason for the layoffs beyond stating that “some parts” of Walmart’s business “have made changes.” It added that the overall number of employees impacted “are small in percentage.”

The layoffs and relocations come a few weeks after Walmart announced it would close its telehealth platform and the 51 health care centers it launched since 2019. The company said the decision was made after determining the segment was not a sustainable business for the retailer.

In February, Walmart shuttered its startup incubator and innovation hub. Based in Austin, Portland and Southern California, those workers shuffled to other locations.
