“Atlantic City finished the summer strongly in August,” New Jersey Casino Control Commission Chairman James Plousis noted in his analysis of the August numbers, released Sept. 16 by the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

And the report included a number of encouraging signs.

Key toplines with year-over-year trend:

  • Casino win for the nine properties: $311.9 million up 6.1%
  • Internet gaming win: $248.4 million up 25.2%
  • Total gaming revenue for , racetracks and their partners: $642.2 million up 15.7%
  • Sports wagering gross revenue: $81.9 million up 30.6%
  • Total handle: $814.3 million

    • Borgata – $80.2 million up 8.2%
    • Hard Rock – $58.3 million up 5.3%
    • Ocean Casino – $51.2 million up 16.2%

“In-person casino win surpassed internet gaming win for the fourth consecutive month, and online gaming win set a monthly record,” said Plousis in his analysis. “For the third time this year, New Jersey’s total gaming revenue surpassed $600 million in one month. Year-to-date, it surpassed $4.5 billion sooner than all prior years.”

Breath of fresh air

Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality, and Tourism for the Stockton University School of Business, noted in her analysis that the monthly gross gaming revenues came as a breath of fresh air for Atlantic City’s casino operators.

“The month not only outpaced August 2024 for brick-and-mortar, internet, and total GGR but set new near-term, single-month revenue records for these segments,” said Bokunewicz. “Summer 2025 (June through August) compared favorably to prior years turning in near-term record total GGR for the period at $1.73 billion – a more than 15% increase over Summer 2024 at $1.5 billion.

“Summer brick-and-mortar numbers followed a similar trend improving nearly 6% in June-August 2025 ($855.1 million) compared to June-August 2024 ($810.5 million).”

She pointed to the concerns that arose earlier this year as internet – which have exploded and continue to set records – outpaced brick-and-mortar revenues.

“The peak summer season in Atlantic City seems to have reversed that trend with June through August revenue at the slots and tables exceeding internet gaming revenue by more than $125 million,” she explained.

Back on track

Plousis echoed those sentiments.

“Atlantic City recorded its highest August casino win since 2012. It was also the first time that monthly casino win exceeded $300 million since August 2012,” he said. Plousis also highlighted that at $855 million, casino win marked its best summer in over a decade. “All nine casinos reported an increase in either slot machine win or table game win, with five reporting increases in both categories.”

Bokunewicz said that the strong summer has gotten year-to-date revenues back on track after a slow start to 2025, with operators entering the fall and winter season with a 2.8% year-over-year cushion.

“It is too soon to say if summer headwinds will carry the industry to year-end GGR growth and what impact this will have on the industry’s bottom line in terms of net revenues and the only too important gross operating profit,” said Bokunewicz.”

“Competitive gaming options and first class in-person experiences provided a memorable summer in Atlantic City and it is well-positioned for continued momentum in the fall season,” said Plousis.
