The basics:

Several staffing changes are underway at one of New Jersey’s top law firms.

Twelve lawyers from Roseland-based Lowenstein Sandler LLP’s insurance recovery practice are joining Indianapolis-headquartered national law firm Barnes & Thornburg.

In an April 10 press release, that firm said the additions will expand its litigation and risk management services, as well as grow its East Coast, West Coast and Midwest presence.

According to Barnes & Thornburg, partners Lynda Bennett, Arthur Armstrong, Alexander Brown, Craig Dashiell, Rachel Hudgins, Eric Jesse, Jeremy King and Heather Weaver round out the East Coast additions along with associates Alexander Corson, Madison Diaz, Michael Kleinman and Madilynne Lee.

Founded in 1982, the full-service firm’s practice areas span corporate law, litigation, labor & employment, intellectual property and government services. It has more than 850 lawyers across 26 markets.

According to Barnes & Thornburg, the former Lowenstein attorneys will set up its existing offices in Morristown, New York City, Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Billions secured

Morristown-based Bennett will co-chair the group alongside Lilit Asadourian in Los Angeles and Kevin Dreher in Chicago.

With the new arrivals, the practice now includes 50 insurance lawyers across the U.S. focused on representing corporate policyholders in insurance coverage disputes. According to Barnes & Thornburg, the team has secured billions for clients across lines that include D&O, cyber, product liability, environmental, construction, employment and severe bodily injury claims.

Barnes & Thornburg Managing Partner Andrew Detherage said, “This latest acquisition continues our strategic growth and success as a destination for high-level talent.”

He added, “This sophisticated group joins us at a pivotal time as we execute on our vision to build on our national areas of strength and provide crucial, market-leading service to our clients.”

‘Coast-to-coast powerhouse’

Bennett shared, “We are excited to join Barnes & Thornburg because the combination of our two insurance teams creates a coast-to-coast powerhouse of highly skilled coverage practitioners who will leverage the firm’s national platform to serve our clients wherever they need us.”

“Our team is highly effective because we are a known quantity within the insurance industry and we understand how the market works. We have deep relationships with insurance brokers and are respected by our adversaries for being strategic and pragmatic,” said Bennett.

Barnes & Thornburg New Jersey Office Managing Partner Michael Zogby also expressed excitement over the “powerhouse insurance recovery team” joining the firm. He noted the “substantial presence” the firm has built in the region since entering the market in 2022.

“Our new colleagues are not only renowned legal strategists but also proven leaders. Their deep roots in New Jersey and Philadelphia, combined with a prominent national profile, reinforces our commitment to excellence for our clients,” he said.

Growing south

The announcement came three days before Lowenstein Sandler welcomed four new attorneys to its bankruptcy & restructuring department:

  • Shanti Mulpuru Katona – partner
  • Elisa Hyder – counsel
  • Katherine Devanney – associate
  • Michael DiPietro – associate

According to Lowenstein, they all previously worked at national law firm Polsinelli and will be based in its newly opened Delaware office. The Wilmington office launched last month with the arrival of partner Christopher Ward.

Jeffrey Cohen, Lowenstein partner and bankruptcy & restructuring department chair, commented, “We are thrilled to welcome Shanti, Elisa, Katie, and Michael to our rapidly growing Bankruptcy group. Their experience in debtor-side representations is an ideal complement to our longstanding creditor-side practice, and they are a great team to help build out the firm’s mid-Atlantic presence.”

Katona said she believes Lowenstein’s “collaborative spirit and exceptional talent will enhance the ability of my colleagues and I to offer holistic counsel on the many issues that arise for companies in distressed situations and bankruptcy.”

“I am thrilled to not only be part of a firm that is growing strategically and successfully across national markets, but to partner with lawyers who have over the years become close friends,” she continued.

Building on a ‘Vision’

Lowenstein newly named managing partner Jonathan Wishnia feels the expansion of the 65-year-old firm’s national bankruptcy practice “reflects the momentum we’re seeing across our practices.”

“Our strategic plan, Vision 2030, envisions Lowenstein’s growth throughout key markets and in the practice areas where our clients expect sophisticated, business focused counsel. That’s why we are investing in talent like our new team in Delaware,” he said.

Along with tripled revenues and quadrupled profits, over the past 25 years Lowenstein has sharpened sector focus; expanded nationally; and strengthened market-leading practices across litigation, corporate, restructuring, regulatory, technology and investment management.

In 2025, firm revenue exceeded $500 million for the first time in its history.

With additional offices in Palo Alto, Utah and Washington, Lowenstein ranks as the No. 1 law firm by number of attorneys in New Jersey, according to the NJBIZ Leads & Data Center.
