The CarePoint board said Tuesday it appointed Dr. Achintya Moulick as chief executive officer of CarePoint Health System.

Moulick came to CarePoint in February of 2020 as the chief transition officer through management and services company Alvarez and Marsal to help the system’s hospitals during its transition.

At that time, the three Hudson County CarePoint Health facilities – Christ Hospital in Jersey City, Hoboken University Medical Center and the Bayonne Medical Center – became one of the leading hospital groups in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moulick is an internationally renowned cardiovascular surgeon with expertise in congenital, neonatal, pediatric and adult acquired heart disease. He has extensive experience in program and hospital building as well as creating value in clinical care. He is recognized for his ability to bring innovation and clinical quality in newly established hospitals as well as existing programs.

Frontrunners in anticipating the influx of patients and implementing innovative techniques, CarePoint’s hospitals also assisted the New Jersey Department of Health with many of the state’s challenges during the pandemic. They developed a communication methodology with its leadership, CarePoint’s staff, faculty and system leaders to maintain discipline and vigilance during the major pandemic surge, and have since made extensive preparations for the future to keep the patients, staff and the community safe.

The hospitals, under the leadership of Moulick, created standardized treatment protocols, used convalescent plasma therapy, novel drug treatments, nitric oxide treatment for pulmonary artery hypertension, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) modalities, and other advanced therapies to care for patients impacted by COVID-19.

The hospitals also started a Research Group, which has had more than six publications this year, either under review or that have been published, dealing with various aspects of COVID-19 infection and treatment.

“The new challenges that health care systems face, requires leaders with significant clinical as well as administrative experience. I have been very impressed by the quality of clinical and administrative leadership in our three hospitals and I look forward to helping the hospitals care for all of our patients,” Moulick stated. “A major focus of this role will be helping guide the hospitals to new opportunities and allow our system to innovate, ensuring we keep a step ahead of the clinical challenges today and into the future. We will continue providing exceptional care to the communities we serve as well as support patients from other communities and centers seeking specialized care.”

Moulick established major centers of excellence both abroad as well as in the U.S. He is a thought leader in population health and in patient-centric health care. He earned an MBA from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

In June, Hudson Regional Hospital said it entered into a contract to buy the properties on which Bayonne Medical Center and Hoboken University Medical Center sit from current owner Avery Eisenreich for $76 million and $144 million, respectively. A move that drew concern from community officials.
