DCA launches new grant to support Main Street NJ districts

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs () this week announced a new grant opportunity aimed at assisting Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) district organizations with physical improvement projects as well as the development and implementation of goals.

The awards aim to improve the appearance, quality of life and local commerce within MSNJ districts.

Projects eligible for the Main Street New Jersey FY24 Transformation Grant include:

  • Storefront and façade improvement projects
  • Streetscaping projects
  • Courtyard and alleyway improvement projects
  • Public art projects
  • Placemaking projects
  • Operational assistance
  • Marketing assistance

 

According to the DCA, the are expected to be awarded for amounts of up to $150,000 with limited additional funding possible.

The application period opens Feb. 15, 2024, and closes April 15, 2024.

Successful applicants will be required to utilize the entire grant award within 12 months; 50% of the grant is awarded up front and the remainder reimbursed after completion of the project or use of funds.

Gov. Phil Murphy will nominate Jacquelyn Suarez to serve as the next commissioner of the state Department of Community Affairs, succeeding the late Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.

“To date, the MSNJ program has distributed more than $4.3 million in grants to MSNJ district organizations,” said DCA acting Commissioner Jacquelyn Suarez in a press release. “This demonstrates our commitment to empowering communities so they can promote economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for residents. Transformation Grants are community investments that will play a pivotal role in contributing to a more vibrant and resilient local economy.”
