In its largest campus upgrade in nearly 20 years, Georgian Court University will commit $19 million to modernize student housing, academic facilities and core infrastructure at its Lakewood campus.

The university’s board of trustees has approved the plan, it announced Feb. 24. The initiative includes renovations to Maria Hall and St. Joseph Hall, the creation of a new student gathering space, HVAC upgrades in Raymond Dining Hall and the School of Education, improvements to Mercy Hall Chapel and elevator modernizations across campus.

“This historic commitment reflects our long-term dedication to campus growth, student success, and the well-being of our community,” said Eugene Cornacchia, interim president.

The centerpiece is a full renovation of Maria Hall. The 59-year-old residence hall houses up to 219 students, primarily first-year residents. After moisture and ventilation issues prompted a temporary closure for the spring 2026 semester, the building will undergo extensive upgrades. The work will include new HVAC systems, windows, flooring and mechanical infrastructure.

Georgian Court expects to complete major residential improvements in time for the fall 2026 semester.

The project marks the university’s largest facilities investment since the 2008 completion of the Wellness Center. That work encompassed a 67,000-square-foot, LEED Gold-certified hub for athletics and recreation. It also features a 1,200-seat arena and training facilities.

“As a university founded by the Sisters of Mercy, we are called to steward our resources responsibly and to create environments where students can live, learn, and grow with dignity,” said Cornacchia. “These improvements are part of that commitment.”
