Located just off the platform from Newark Penn Station in the Ironbound, Fifty-Five Union is now leasing its 403 units.
Developed by Newark-based J&L Cos. and designed by Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, the 12-story building at 55 Union St. also features a public plaza – which will be activated throughout the year to promote connections with the community – and 3,078 square feet of retail space.
The property offers studio, one- and two-bedroom units with integrated technology, including keyless entry and apartments pre-wired with cost-effective ($50 per month) 1-gigbit internet service using Newark Fiber powered by Gigxero and Invest Newark.
“We are thrilled to begin leasing at Fifty-Five Union which introduces a new, modern living experience to the area,” said Gabriel Lopez, vice president at J&L Cos. “As a local company long committed to the positive growth and economic vitality of Newark, we understand and appreciate the unique character of this community and have worked tirelessly to deliver a property that embodies the spirit and energy of the city.
“We are grateful to the many municipal officials and agencies who worked with us in a collaborative effort on this transformative project, as well as the hundreds of tradespeople, architects, designers and everyone else who helped shape this remarkable residential development. We now look forward to welcoming residents and connecting them to all the unique qualities that define the Ironbound and Downtown Newark,” he continued.
Outside, there are more than 20,000 square feet of amenity space, including a landscaped rooftop garden and entertainment area offering New York City and downtown Newark views. In the center of the property, a courtyard also offers an entertainment area, along with grill stations, fire pits and lounge seating.
Inside, amenities include: a boutique lobby with 24-hour concierge package reception and coffee bar; club room, private dining room and catering kitchen, fitness center with outdoor exercise area; and a business lounge with private and coworking spaces, conference rooms and Wi-Fi.
The pet-friendly building offers an indoor parking garage, private bicycle and cold storage, and electronic package lockers.
According to J&L Cos., though, Fifty-Five Union’s greatest amenity is the Ironbound.
The developer said it has partnered with Gallery Aferro – Newark’s oldest operating artist-run space, according to J&L, founded in the Ironbound in 2003 – to display works of art from local artists throughout the property. Furnished model homes feature pieces by Anne Q. McKeown, and work from local artists will be programmed into the lobby, amenity spaces and interior courtyard.
J&L said it also currently considering submissions for an outdoor sculpture to be displayed in the public plaza located at the entrance of Fifty-Five Union.
Other local business partnerships currently include Sihana Café, which J&L said will provide coffee to residents at no charge.
Monthly rates start at $1,900 with initial occupancy scheduled for this month. More information is available here.
