Murphy highlights budget funding in Atlantic City

Matthew Fazelpoor//August 29, 2022

During a Monday visit to Atlantic City, Gov. Phil Murphy continued his recent statewide mini tour to tout community investments that come via the recently passed Fiscal Year 2023 budget.

The Murphy Administration says that Atlantic City is one of many municipalities that will benefit from direct state investments in areas such as a public works and projects.

In recent weeks, on the heels of signing the FY2023 budget into law, Murphy has made similar visits to Camden, Paterson and Passaic.

The spending plan includes more than $43 million in direct municipal aid for Atlantic City, including $2.15 million from the one-time Municipal Relief Fund, which will go toward the city’s day-to-day operations; $2 million earmarked for the Anti-Violence Out-of-School Youth Summer program to provide local children with safe opportunities; and another $20 million in federal funding secured for critical upgrades to Route 40.

Additionally, more than $16 million in Fiscal Year 2022 Transitional Aid was allocated to Atlantic City for a variety of projects and needs, such as for public works resources and new vehicles, boardwalk repairs, new fire engines, and long-sought-funding ($5 million) for a citywide camera installation project.

“The investments in this year’s budget and other state support make it clear that we support and value Atlantic City and will continue to work alongside city leadership to help this community prosper,” said Murphy. “From facilitating day-to-day operation to making critical infrastructure improvements, this funding will go a long way in benefitting countless Atlantic City families.”

“Aside from the investments highlighted today, we’ve expanded professional training to build the capacity of municipal staff, provided by the city with state experts they can turn to for help in local government operations, and allocated sufficient funding for projects in the neighborhood revitalization, flood mitigations, community policing, and youth development,” said Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver.

“I’m proud to be able to join our state and local leaders as we highlight some of the amazing community investments being made in Atlantic City,” said state Sen. Vince Polistina, R-2nd District. “Atlantic City has faced real challenges, but by working across party lines, we were able to secure funding that will allow for many needed projects to be completed. We look forward to continuing to work with the Governor’s office to make sure Atlantic City can get itself back on the right track.”

“It’s truly a great day here in the City of Atlantic City when we get the resources from the state for some much need projects,” said Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small.
