Gov. Phil Murphy officially unveiled George Helmy, a now-former staffer for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, as the office’s new chief of staff to replace outgoing Pete Cammarano, who has been embroiled in a scandal into why the Murphy administration hired a campaign aide accused of sexual assault.
Helmy, who previously worked as the state director of Booker’s office, will take on the chief of staff post on Feb. 4 and earn a $175,000 yearly salary.
“George is uniquely equipped to help lead our team as we begin our second year in office,” Murphy said in a Friday statement. “I’ve seen his leadership on projects ranging from the Gateway Program to Homeland Security funding to the all-important constituent relations.”
Helmy’s predecessor, Cammarano, stepped down just after Murphy’s State of the State address on Jan. 15, He was called to testify several times before a legislative committee investigating the Murphy administration’s hiring practices.
Katie Brennan, a current housing official in the administration, alleges that in 2017 when she volunteered for the Murphy campaign, she was sexually assaulted by campaign staffer Al Alvarez.
Brennan said she made numerous attempts to bring the allegations to the attention of the transition team and later the administration, including Murphy, but nevertheless Alvarez was hired as chief of staff at the Schools Development Authority.
Alvarez resigned from his post in October 2018 after a reporter from The Wall Street Journal contacted him about the allegations, which he denies.
Brennan, currently the chief of staff at the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, is suing the state and Murphy administration, alleging they are now using a non-disclosure agreement to silence her.
