The rise of internet gaming in the Garden State is once again the story, following the Division of Gaming Enforcement release of its March 2025 gaming report April 16.

“Internet gaming win set a monthly record in March, exceeding $200 million for the seventh consecutive month,” said New Jersey Casino Control Commission Chairman James Plousis in his remarks.

The casinos and their partners reported an internet gaming win of $243.9 million last month. The figure marks a jump of 23.7% from last March.

“March 2025 may mark a watershed moment for the Atlantic City gaming industry,” said Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality, and Tourism (LIGHT), Stockton University School of Business, in her analysis of the DGE report. “For the second consecutive month, revenue from the internet gaming sector has surpassed revenue from brick-and-mortar operations ($231 million). Internet gaming revenue for the month also set a new single month record – surpassing the record of $222 million set in January of this year.”

The casinos, racetracks and their partners reported total gaming revenue of $546.1 million, up 3.7% over March 2024.

“Strong results in the online gaming segment continue to bolster New Jersey’s monthly total gaming revenue, which rose nearly four percent,” said Plousis. “Year-to-date, total gaming revenue eclipsed $1.58 billion, the highest first quarter figure in over a decade.”

“In perhaps an even more stark contrast, monthly traditional brick-and-mortar gaming revenues were down nearly 4% year-over-year compared to a nearly 24% year-over-year increase in monthly internet gaming revenues,” said Bokunewicz.

“Atlantic City’s in-person casino win was lower compared to the same month last year, with gamblers enjoying luck at the tables,” said Plousis. “Still, it was the second-best March result in 12 years.”

Looking ahead

“Rounding out the first quarter of 2025, internet gaming led the industry at $673 million in revenue for the year-to-date compared to the $644 million realized by traditional brick-and-mortar operations in the same period,” said Bokunewicz. “Given the first quarter of the year is traditionally slow for land-based operations, especially in the face of unfavorable weather conditions, it is impossible to say if this a trend that will continue into the spring and summer season when the resort traditionally sees more visitors.”

Other key findings in the March 2025 gaming report include:

• Sports wagering total handle: $1.1 billion
• Sports wagering gross revenue: $71.3 million
• Top performing properties by casino win:
  • Borgata – $58.4 million, up 3.3%
  • Hard Rock – $44.5 million, up 0.2%
  • Ocean Casino – $34.7 million, down 14.8%

“In a somewhat surprising turn of events, sports wagering revenues for both retail and online sportsbooks operated by casino and racetracks alike are down both for the month and the year-to-date to the tune of 20% and 19%, respectively,” said Bokunewicz. “Sports wagering handle increased in March 2025 compared to February 2025 ($0.99 billion), but declined compared to March 2024 ($1.3 billion).”

Bill Pascrell III, partner at PPAG, said New Jersey’s iGaming record again being smashed is not a fluke.

“It’s a flashing neon sign pointing to where the market is heading. This seventh straight month over $200 million in iGaming revenue should be a wake-up call to anyone still underestimating the power of digital gaming,” he told NJBIZ. “But with growth comes responsibility. As internet gaming outpaces brick-and-mortar, policymakers need to double down on smart regulation and reject short-sighted policies that threaten to stall momentum. We need a balanced ecosystem where innovation is thriving, retail is reinvented, and all stakeholders have a seat at the table. That’s how New Jersey stays on top.”

Looking ahead

Plousis closed his remarks highlighting the Commission’s upcoming eighth annual Casino Career Fair.

“The casinos are gearing up for the summer season and have over 1,700 job openings,” said Plousis, noting that job seekers will be able to meet representatives from all nine casinos in one location. “People exploring career opportunities are encouraged to come to the Commission’s office on April 24 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to take advantage of this unique event.”
