Newark Company Launches Marketplace to Connect Independent Business Owners with Buyers

Owners of neighborhood convenience stores, bodegas, liquor stores and similar businesses often spend years building loyal customer bases before deciding it is time to pursue another venture or step away from day-to-day operations. Finding a serious buyer, however, can be a challenge. Many owners rely on word of mouth, business brokers or various online listings, which can make it harder for prospective buyers to compare opportunities and may add complexity to the process.

Newark-based National Retail Solutions (NRS) believes there is room for a marketplace built specifically for those transactions. The company recently launched SellMyBodega.com, an online platform designed to connect independent business owners who are ready to sell with entrepreneurs looking to acquire an established operation. Rather than focusing on a single type of retailer, the marketplace is open to sellers and buyers nationwide across a range of independent businesses.

The platform was created with the practical realities of small-business ownership in mind. Many neighborhood retailers are profitable enterprises with established customer relationships, but they often lack the visibility that larger commercial listings receive. At the same time, entrepreneurs interested in purchasing an operating business can spend weeks searching multiple websites before finding opportunities that match their location, budget or industry experience.

SellMyBodega.com aims to place both groups in one destination where listings are organized by business type and geography. Convenience stores, bodegas, smoke shops, liquor stores, grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and other independent businesses can all be listed on the platform, giving buyers a broader selection while allowing sellers to present their businesses to a nationwide audience.

“Thousands of independent business owners are looking for an easier way to connect with serious buyers,” said Elie Y. Katz, President and CEO of Newark, N.J.-based National Retail Solutions (NRS) and founder of SellMyBodega.com. “Our goal is to help business owners grow their entrepreneurial portfolio by providing a dedicated, accessible database where sellers can promote their businesses and buyers can efficiently search for opportunities by location.”

That emphasis on location reflects one of the practical obstacles involved in buying an existing business. Entrepreneurs are often searching within a particular region or looking for a business model they already understand. Instead of browsing through unrelated commercial listings, users can narrow their search to specific categories while reviewing information intended to help them evaluate each opportunity.

Listings include business details, photographs, financial highlights and information about future growth potential, allowing prospective buyers to gain an initial understanding before reaching out to a seller. The company says the platform is designed to simplify the early stages of the buying process by making comparable information available in a consistent format.

For business owners, the marketplace is also intended to lower the barrier to advertising a sale. As part of the launch, sellers can publish a listing free for the first 60 days, giving owners an opportunity to gauge buyer interest before committing to a paid subscription. The company also allows multiple listings to be managed under a single account, a feature that may appeal to owners with more than one location or investors managing several businesses.

Other features include online listing management, nationwide exposure to prospective buyers, dedicated categories for retail and service businesses, subscription-based pricing after the introductory period and search tools that help buyers identify opportunities matching their interests.

The launch comes at a time when succession planning has become an increasingly important issue for many independent operators. Owners who have spent decades running neighborhood businesses are approaching retirement, while others are evaluating strategic exits after navigating years of changing consumer habits, inflationary pressures and evolving operating costs. Selling a business can be part of that broader planning process, though finding suitable buyers may still present challenges.

Those same conditions have also created opportunities for entrepreneurs who prefer acquiring an existing operation instead of starting from scratch. Purchasing a business with established revenue, existing employees and a loyal customer base can shorten the path to ownership, although buyers still need reliable information to compare opportunities and determine which businesses fit their goals.

NRS enters the market with experience serving independent retailers. A subsidiary of IDT Corporation, the company provides point-of-sale technology and payment processing services to thousands of small and midsize retailers across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Its broader portfolio includes store management systems, merchant services, e-commerce tools, payroll services, business cash advances and specialized solutions for industries such as convenience stores and gas stations.

That background gives the company familiarity with the operational challenges facing many of the businesses expected to use the marketplace. Rather than expanding into a completely new audience, SellMyBodega.com builds on relationships with independent retailers that already rely on NRS technology while opening the platform to any eligible seller or buyer across the country.

As more business owners begin planning what comes after years of operating neighborhood stores, the company sees the marketplace as a way to make ownership transitions more visible and more accessible. Instead of leaving buyers and sellers to navigate disconnected channels, SellMyBodega.com is intended to provide a single place where established businesses can be discovered, evaluated and positioned for their next chapter.
