Newark Symphony Hall continues restoration efforts as the storied venue’s centennial birthday approaches in 2025.

Phase 2 of the four-part, $75 million project will begin in June, NSH announced May 20. The work will reactivate The Arts + Education Lab. At 30,000 square feet, the space will host community gatherings as well as foster artistic expression and cultural enrichment.

Covering two floors of the building’s front wing, the work aims to expand the facility’s production capabilities and community connectivity.

The Phase 2 work is expected to wrap in January 2025, when NSH celebrates its 100th birthday.

The first phase of the project overhauled the Terrace Ballroom. Completed last summer, the 15,000-square-foot space is inspired by the 1920s jazz era. Symphony Hall first announced its ambitious restoration effort in 2021. Trenton-based Clarke Caton Hintz serves as lead design and architect team for the project.

The effort will also include a complete exterior renovation.

In addition to the Broad Street-facing façade, the project includes:
  • Essential repairs to the building’s envelope (masonry and metal restoration)
  • Window refurbishment
  • Replacement of non-historic doors
  • New lighting, marquees and signage

Exterior canopies over the main and side entrances will help act as wayfinding signage, while welcoming patrons.

As part of the Phase 2 work, the installation of a new elevator will allow for easier and more secure entry in the western part of the building, NSH said. The lobby will also receive an accessible entrance.

According to President and CEO Talia Young, the “magical” work has exceeded her expectations.

“As we continue to create a space for Black and Brown artists to showcase and produce original work, I am constantly inspired by the passion and talent of the individuals who grace our stage. Newark Symphony Hall is not just a venue; it is a beacon of artistic expression and cultural pride.”

Come up to the lab

Located on parts of the second and fourth floors, the new Arts + Education Lab will offer interactive programs for all ages. The fourth floor will receive a complete rehabilitation, with new walls, ceilings, lighting, mechanical systems, fire alarm/sprinkler systems, accessible toilet facilities, various deferred maintenance items and new fixtures.

Upon completion, the fourth floor will feature activated spaces, such as practice rooms, dance studios, a multi-purpose lounge and kitchenette space.

According to NSH, the space is designed to nurture and invest in the Newark community by educating new and aging artists, offering workforce development for film and television production, investing in the Black creative economy and more.

NSH sits at the southern entrance to Newark’s Arts & Education District.

“Newark Symphony Hall has a long history as one of our greatest stages,” stated Mayor Ras Baraka. “This program to continue restoring its structure, modernize its production facilities, and expand its community outreach shows that it continues its massive present commitment to our city and its residents and shares our exciting future. I congratulate the NSH team on this initiative, and look forward to seeing our city’s future stars shine on its stage.”
