Newsweek releases inaugural specialty-hospital rankings

unveiled a trifecta of specialty-hospital rankings in the past week, two of which are brand new. 

Released July 24, the publication unveiled its second annual America’s Best Children’s Hospitals list as well as its inaugural Best Cardiac Hospitals and Best Neurological Hospitals rankings. 

For all three, Newsweek partnered with consumer data firm Statista to determine its findings. Researchers used data from surveys of health care professionals working in each field; hospital quality metrics; patient experience surveys and whether the facilities have implemented Patient-Reported Outcome Measures to improve care. 

Children’s Hospitals 

For this list, hospitals were ranked across eight fields: cardiology and cardiac surgery; endocrinology; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; neonatology; neurology and neurosurgery; oncology and hematology; pulmonology and thoracic surgery; and orthopedics. 

NJ hospitals named to Best Children’s Hospitals 2024: 

  • No. 40: Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick (RWJBarnabas Health) 
    Specialty: Pulmonology 
  • No. 41: Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Morristown (Atlantic Health System) 
    Specialty: Neurology 
  • No. 43: Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Morristown (Atlantic Health System) 
    Specialty: Gastroenterology 
  • No. 43: Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark (RWJBarnabas Health) 
    Specialty: Endocrinology 

 

Cardiac Hospitals 

Following its evaluations of the data from their research, Newsweek and Statista listed the top 175 hospitals in the nation for cardiac considerations. Several facilities also were highlighted for their notable treatment area. 

NJ hospitals named to Best Cardiac Hospitals 2024: 

  • No. 36: Morristown Medical Center, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, Morristown (Atlantic Health System) 
    Notable treatment: Coronary artery disease  
  • No. 77: Heart & Vascular Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack (Hackensack Meridian Health) 
  • No. 137: Overlook Medical Center, Summit (Atlantic Health System)  
  • No. 144: Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Englewood (Englewood Health) 

 

Englewood Hospital acknowledged its ranking in a July 25 statement.  

“We are proud to be among this elite group of heart hospitals across the U.S. that are recognized for their superior cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and vascular/cardiothoracic surgery programs,” said Dr. Joseph De Gregorio, executive director of cardiovascular services at Englewood Hospital. “Patients can rely on Englewood Hospital for safe, high-quality, innovative cardiac care and this is a special recognition of our team’s ranking among the best in the country.” 

Neurological Hospitals

As with the best for cardiac care, this ranking included only 175 facilities across the nation for their expertise in treating disorders that affect the brain and nervous system. Several also were highlighted for their notable treatments.  

NJ hospitals named to Best Neurological Hospitals 2024: 

  • No. 51: Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack (Hackensack Meridian Health) 
  • No. 74: Morristown Medical Center, Morristown (Atlantic Health System) 
  • No. 80: Overlook Medical Center, Summit (Atlantic Health System) 
    Notable treatment: Spinal fusion  
  • No. 120: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston (RWJBarnabas Health)
