A multimillion dollar renovation project is nearing completion at the oldest continuously running restaurant in New Jersey.
Black Horse Tavern & Pub in Mendham expects to reopen Jan. 13 with a revamped kitchen, dining room, bar and outside space, according to its owners, Morristown-based 40North Restaurant Group.
Renovations at the pub portion of the property began in March 2024. Despite setbacks – including a fire that damaged parts of the tavern building in September 2024 – the project remained on track.
Kevin Felice, vice president of 40North Restaurant Group, said, “The Black Horse holds a special place in the hearts of so many. We’ve approached this renovation with great care, respecting its timeless charm and preserving the memories that make it beloved.”
“At the same time, we’re excited to welcome guests into a refreshed space where providing seamless hospitality is our No. 1 goal. It’s not just about honoring the past—it’s about ensuring this historic gem continues to create memories for generations to come,” he remarked.
Established in 1742, the tavern gave travelers a place to rest and grab a bite to eat. Meanwhile, the pub served as stables to feed horses. Now more than 280 years later, Black Horse remains a beloved local restaurant and bar.
A restoration of the Black Horse’s other on-site structure, the tavern building, will begin in coming months, said 40North. The group acquired the property about 15 years ago.
Other brands in Villa Restaurant Group-owned 40North’s portfolio include: Piattino, The Office Tavern Grill, Town Bar + Kitchen and NOM Mexican Table + Tequila Bar.
Along with an updated interior design highlighting the town’s history, Black Horse will unveil an expanded menu featuring guest favorites and innovative culinary creations.
Black Horse Executive Chef Dan Zappula said he’ll feature a “chef-driven menu that marries post-war American cuisine with contemporary flavors.”
“To keep things familiar, we’ve kept our crowd favorites on the menu. Things like Pot Pie, Chicken Wings and Crab Cakes,” he said. “But, we are thrilled to introduce some new elevated dishes, including housemade pastas, Bronzini and Dry-Aged New York Strip Steak.”
Zappula added, “Whether it’s a family or holiday celebration, casual family dinner, or date night, there is something for everyone.”
A curated wine and cocktail list including specialty and prized wines as well as house favorites will compliment both dinner and lunch menus. There will also be eight signature cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic mocktails, Zappula said.
Reservations for dinner open Jan. 10 on RESY. Lunch is walk-in only, according to the restaurant.
The Black Horse Tavern & Pub will be open Monday to Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Brunch will be served Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Ahead of the grand reopening, the Black Horse is hiring staff for the restaurant. More information is available here.
