South Jersey Industries (SJI) and OPAL Fuels announced this week the commencement of construction on a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in Burlington County.
The project at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex solid waste landfill in Florence marks the second collaboration between the partners. White Plains-based OPAL is a leader in the capture and conversion of biogas into low carbon intensity RNG and renewable electricity.
Some key features of the RNG project include:
The facility expects to displace more than 530,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
According to the stakeholders, the project addresses two critical issues contributing to climate change: methane and transportation emissions.
“SJI is proud to partner with OPAL Fuels on the construction of the Burlington Renewable Natural Gas Facility,” said Mike Renna, president and CEO of SJI. “We are energized to continue our journey towards advancing a sustainable energy landscape in New Jersey.”
“We are proud to work with SJI to develop the Burlington RNG facility, encouraging renewable energy production in New Jersey and supporting the state’s transition to a low carbon economy,” said OPAL co-CEO Jonathan Maurer.

In April, stakeholders ceremoniously broke ground on the Linden Renewable Energy Project, what will be the nation’s largest food waste-to-renewable natural gas facility. Click here for more.
