As the use of artificial intelligence tools grows across all industries, so does the need for professionals who know how to employ them.  

To prep high school students interested in careers in AI and other emerging technologies, South Jersey Gas and the Mark Cuban Foundation are partnering for the third year on an introductory Artificial Intelligence Bootcamp at the utility’s Atlantic City headquarters this fall. 

Taking place over four consecutive Saturdays, from Oct. 14 to Nov. 14, the AI bootcamp is a free opportunity for students. Participants do not need any prior experience with computer science, programming or robotics to apply and attend the half-day sessions. 

During the bootcamp, students will learn what AI is and where they already interact with it. They will also learn the ethical implications of AI systems, including TikTok recommendations, smart home assistants, facial recognition and self-driving cars. Participants will also learn how large language models such as ChatGPT function.   

Leonard Brinson Jr., senior vice president and chief information officer of South Jersey Gas parent company South Jersey Industries, said the bootcamp is a way to create “a lasting impact on the communities we serve.” 

“In addition to making STEM-related education more accessible, the Mark Cuban Foundation AI Bootcamp is a fun way for students to learn more about the topics that interest them,” Brinson added in a statement. 

The deadline to apply for the bootcamp is Sept. 8, 2023.
