In her analysis, Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism, Stockton University School of Business, noted that despite the less-than-impressive performance last month, Atlantic City’s casinos are poised to set a new near-term record in year-end total gaming revenue.

The annual event attracts industry leaders, legislators, regulators, educators, suppliers, gaming lawyers, media and other stakeholders to discuss trends and challenges.

The American Gaming Association's Industry Outlook finds executives think that the current situation is good (68%) or satisfactory (28%) and most (92%) expect that to continue or improve over the next three to six months.

“Year-to-date 2022 total industry gaming revenue exceeds 2021 by 8.9% and, with another 40% at least of revenue still to be earned in 2022," according to Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of LIGHT, Stockton University School of Business.

Last month, New Jersey's casinos, horse tracks and online partners won $401.5 million, a 2.2% increase from June 2021.

Despite challenges facing Atlantic City casinos, the focus locally remains on attracting more visitors while building on spring's momentum with new projects generating buzz.

“Inflation may be beginning to impact in-person gaming revenues," said Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism (LIGHT) at Stockton University, noting that brick-and-mortar gross gaming revenue totals, which had been expected to improve over last month, effectively stayed flat at $233 million.

Over the first three months of 2022, the gaming halls generated $719.8 million in net revenue—outperforming 2021, 2020 and even exceeding 2019's $696.6 million by 3.3%.

Gross revenue totals at brick-and-mortars jumped to $235.3 million, an improvement over last month’s $216.6 million and last year's $189.6 million.

The preparation starts with the moves and investments that the casinos are undertaking.

While the sports betting industry continued its meteoric rise, with wagers breaking the $1 billion mark for the sixth time, seven of the state's nine gaming halls continued to lag behind their in-person, pre-pandemic revenue levels.
