Legislation aimed at cracking down on “sweepstakes gambling” advanced in Trenton May 29.

The Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism, & Historic Preservation Committee approved Senate Bill 4282. According to its sponsors, the measure takes direct aim at a growing number of illegal gambling operations that use sweepstakes-style platforms to skirt state laws.

Key details include:

• Would establish stronger penalties for unlawful gambling operations, including increased fines and potential criminal charges
• Enhances enforcement authority of the Division of Consumer Affairs and the Division of Gaming Enforcement; empowering both agencies to coordinate efforts to investigate and enforce these penalties

Sen. John Burzichelli, D-3rd District, a prime bill sponsor, said the Garden State has a proud tradition of responsible gaming regulation.

“And we will not allow bad actors to exploit legal loopholes at the expense of consumers,” said Burzichelli. “This bill will ensure that our laws are clear, our penalties are stronger, and that we have the tools necessary to shut down illegal sweepstakes gambling operations before they can cause further harm.”

Sen. John McKeon, D-27th District, also a prime bill sponsor, noted that young people are especially vulnerable to schemes that attempt to entice them into illicit gambling practices.

“This bill will put safeguards in place to protect them and others from being exploited and drawn into gambling activities that could haunt them for years to come,” said McKeon.

The Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee approved the companion bill on the Assembly side (A5447) earlier this month.

Bill sponsors say the measures reflect an ongoing commitment to safeguard New Jerseyans from unlawful and unregulated gambling enterprises, which lack consumer protections and oversight.
