In partnership with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Valley Health System established a Graduate Medical Education program to educate the next generation of internal medicine physicians.
The new offering – the Internal Medicine Residency Program – was recently approved and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Valley Health announced Feb. 23.
“Valley is proud to be partnering with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the United States, to establish medical education programs in northern New Jersey,” Dr. Robert Brenner, president of Valley’s Clinical Integration and Physician Enterprise, said in a statement.
Dr. I. Michael Leitman, dean for Graduate Medical Education at the Icahn School, added that Mount Sinai was proud to support Valley Health in bringing medical education to Bergen County.
“These programs will not only increase the number of providers for the community but will also further improve the high quality of care,” Leitman added.
According to the Ridgewood health care provider, Valley plans to recruit the first internal medicine residents this summer to start in July 2024. It also plans to add more programs in the future.

Dr. Reham Shaaban will serve as the ACGME program designated institutional official, overseeing all graduate medical education programs, as well as the director of the residency program.
Shaaban said the program is “an exciting endeavor to bring graduate medical education to Valley.”
Shaaban, who is board certified in internal medicine and specializes in medical education and inpatient acute medicine, earned her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine and associate chief residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., according to her September 2022 hiring announcement.
Shaaban also sees patients at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.
