Major League Baseball star Justin Turner signed on as an equity partner of a Westwood-based grooming essentials brand.
As part of the agreement announced June 4 by Beard Club, the Toronto Blue Jays player will serve as an ambassador as well as participate in marketing initiatives to further reach one of the brand’s fastest-growing segments: sports fans.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Known for his signature red beard, the two-time All Star and World Series champion said, “As someone who takes pride in my beard, grooming has always been a significant aspect of my routine. I am thrilled to partner with Beard Club, a brand that shares my commitment to quality and innovation.”
Turner wasn’t allowed to grow a beard as a minor leaguer with the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. However, he started growing his full facial hair after getting called up for his rookie year in the major leagues in 2009.
A fan favorite with the Mets, Turner later joined the Los Angeles Dodgers and became a folk hero for his play — and his beard — as a member of the 2020 world championship team. During the most recent offseason, he signed with the Blue Jays.
“Once I didn’t have to abide by that rule in the minors, I was like, ‘Thank God, I don’t have to shave anymore,’” Turner commented. “Once I ended up with the Dodgers and started letting it go, it became a brand for me. It became part of me, and now being a part of Beard Club and having everything I need to keep me looking as good as I possibly can, it’s a no-brainer.”
Founded in 2015, Beard Club’s line includes a beard trimmer, body trimmer, beard oil, leave-in thickening conditioning, beard & face wash, and beard cream. The product formulas use ingredients to nourish, strengthen and style beards of all lengths and textures, according to the company.
The brand’s backers also include NBA star James Harden and musical artist Kid Cudi. Beard Club made its retail debut in April at Target stores nationwide.
Jason Kimball, head of brand at Beard Club, said the venture is excited to welcome Turner.
“Justin’s dedication to excellence, both on and off the field, makes him an ideal partner for our brand. His addition as an equity partner further reinforces our commitment to celebrating ‘The Best Beards in the Game’ and inspiring men everywhere to Craft with Confidence,” he said.
