Two bed & breakfasts in are among the best places in the country for a charming getaway, according to new ranking from U.S. News & World Report.

In its inaugural list of the finest special small lodging establishments, the publication recognized more than 250 bed & breakfasts, inns and small hotels across 17 U.S. destinations. The evaluations assessed ambiance, complimentary offerings and cultural experience.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the destinations were selected based on reader research indicating that staying in B&B accommodations in those small cities and towns would be of interest to travelers.

Besides Cape May, the list included preferred locations, such as Bar Harbor, Maine; Key West, Fla.; Gettysburg, Pa.; Savannah, Ga.; Salem, Mass.; Asheville, N.C., and Boston, Mass.

Rankings were then determined based upon each property’s ratings, annual awards from distinguished travel publications and TripAdvisor user scores, according to U.S. News & World Report.

In Cape May, the Virginia Hotel and the Southern Mansion were the best bed & breakfasts.

Rounding out the Cape May B&B rankings are:

  • No. 4 – Wilbraham Mansion
  • No. 5 – The Mason Cottage Inn
  • No. 6 – John Wesley Inn
  • No. 7 – Bedford Inn
  • No. 8 – The Hugh Boutique B&B
  • No. 9 – Angel of the Sea
  • No. 10 – Beauclaires Bed & Breakfast Inn
  • No. 11 – The Dormer House
  • No. 12 – Casablanca
  • No. 13 – Elaine’s Cape May Boutique Hotel
  • No. 14 – Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant
  • No. 15 – Rhythm of the Sea

 

“B&Bs typically offer a unique atmosphere, a complimentary breakfast and a cultural experience authentic to their given location,” Zach Watson, senior travel editor at U.S. News, said in a statement. “The 2024 Best Bed & Breakfasts rankings offer travelers options for staying at a top-rated property, with all the charm and personal touches of an intimate stay.”
