Doherty Enterprises Inc. is expanding its restaurant portfolio with the acquisition of 21 Applebee’s locations in New York City.

Already one of the largest franchisees of the casual dining chain in the U.S., the Allendale-based group further cemented its status following its deal with Apple-Metro Inc., which had the rights to operate the casual dining brand’s restaurants in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

An Applebee’s franchisee since 1993, Doherty already owned and operated 104 of the brand’s restaurants in New Jersey, New York, Florida and Georgia. In addition to Applebee’s, Doherty’s portfolio of more than 160 restaurants in New Jersey, New York, Florida and Georgia includes establishments such as Panera Bread and Chevys Fresh Mex, as well as its own concepts: The Shannon Rose Irish Pub and Sputino Wine Bar & Italian Tapas.

Following its deal with Apple Metro, Doherty now ranks 25th in the Top 200 Franchisees by Restaurant Finance Monitor.

The 39-year-old family-owned business is also considered one of the largest foodservice revenue companies in the U.S. by Nation’s Restaurant News and one of the largest privately held businesses in New Jersey, ranking No. 23 on the 2023 NJBIZ Top 250 Privately Owned Companies list, with revenue of $462.32 million.

Ed Doherty, chairman and chief executive officer, described the acquisition as “a pivotal moment in our company’s journey” and one that “aligns with our strategic vision for growth and innovation in the restaurant space.”

Employees currently working at the acquired restaurants will be offered jobs with Doherty, a transition that will ensure “a seamless experience for guests while preserving the expertise and dedication of the current team members,” the company said.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Apple Metro team into the Doherty family, knowing that their expertise and commitment will further strengthen our position in the industry,” Doherty said.
