Longshot Baby Vino delivered a 28-1 upset victory in the 59th running of the $1 million NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park July 18. The win earns an automatic berth in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic while making history for trainer Lindsay Schultz and jockey Jorge Vargas Jr.

Baby Vino outdueled Preakness winner Napoleon Solo by a half-length on a sloppy track to secure the guaranteed spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland Oct. 31 as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series.

The race marked several milestones. In addition to Schultz becoming the first woman to train a Haskell winner in the race’s 59-year history, Monmouth Park-based Vargas also earned the first Grade 1 victory of his career. Marcus Osborn and James “Smoky” Osborn’s Cosmo Stables as well as Josh Isner’s Delta Squad Racing co-own Baby Vino.

According to the , the Haskell generated a total handle of $16.65 million. The event attracted 35,608 fans to Monmouth Park.

Baby Vino paid $58 on a $2 win bet, the largest Haskell payout since 1985.

Schultz has 60 horses stabled on the Monmouth Park backside. In a news release from Monmouth Park, he said the victory marked a significant moment for both her stable and the colt.

“It’s a really big deal. It’s so great for this horse. From the moment he started working we just loved this horse, and to really show what he has is what we do it for,” Schultz said. “Hopefully, there will be more Grade 1 wins to come.”
