Parsippany-based B&G Foods Inc. is teaming up with America’s Grow-a-Row (AGAR), a not-for-profit organization in Pittstown that plants, grows, harvests, and distributes fresh fruits and vegetables to those facing food insecurity.
In a Nov. 17 announcement of the philanthropic partnership, B&G said it plans to donate $250,000 next year to AGAR, which will result in 1.25 million servings of produce to communities in need across the U.S.
B&G, the parent company of brands such as Cream of Wheat, Green Giant, Ortega and Dash, said the collaboration will also provide its N.J.-based employees with an opportunity to volunteer locally by helping to harvest produce that will go on to be donated to other areas of the country where the company has facilities, creating a full-circle donation experience.
“Partnering with AGAR is an opportunity to use our passion for food to make a real impact in communities, especially food deserts,” said Casey Keller, president and chief executive officer of B&G Foods. “By providing 1.25 million servings of produce to those who are in need, we are making it easier for families to eat healthy, nourishing foods.”
Since its founding 20 years ago, AGAR has donated more than 17 million pounds – or 68 million servings – of fresh produce to food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries in the tri-state area. Additionally, produce reaches food banks from Maine to Virginia through a Feeding America mixing center in Philadelphia.
Over the next two years, AGAR plans to expand into southeastern and midwestern states, the organization said.
“We are very grateful to B&G Foods for the generous donation that will do so much to further our mission,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “Each year, we donate 2.5 million pounds of produce and corporate donors like B&G Foods help us give even more to those in need.”
