As part of an East Coast expansion effort, popular chicken and biscuit chain Bojangles plans to ramp up its presence in New Jersey.
After signing a development deal with an unspecified franchisee, the popular chicken and biscuits chain plans to open 35 restaurants across the state.
Additional details on the timeline for openings, as well as territories the brand is eyeing, were not provided. A spokesperson for Bojangles did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
Founded in 1977, the North Carolina-based brand is known for its Cajun-seasoned fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, sandwiches, salads, sides and desserts.
Until recently, the chain’s footprint of 800 locations nationwide did not include New Jersey. A previous Bojangles outpost in Newark closed years ago, according to NJ.com.
However, through a separate agreement with franchisees with Dipak Patel and Agam Vaidya, Bojangles made its local comeback four months ago with a restaurant in Piscataway. The operators have a deal to open 10 locations in Middlesex, Essex, Union, Bergen and Hudson counties.

While Bojangles has not yet confirmed other in-state eateries, NJ.com reported the rollout will include Marlboro, Vineland and Neptune. Bojangles also has eyes on a site in Brick, according to The Asbury Park Press.
Additionally, it is plotting a return to New York City after a four-decade absence.
According to the private equity-owned chain, more than 50 restaurants will open in the city over the next decade, starting with a spot in Brooklyn this winter.
Commenting on the growth, Bojangles CEO Jose Armario said, “It’s a monumental moment, now that we’re entering the New York Metropolitan area again. The East Coast is craving the authentic, Southern charm that Bojangles delivers, and we’re excited to introduce locals to something new.”
“The franchise groups behind this expansion are the exact partners we want to grow with – they bring the industry know-how, operational experience and leadership needed to grow Bojangles in a bustling market like New York. Supporting and leading our franchisees to success is fundamental to our mission as a brand, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what this next chapter holds,” he said.
