The basics:

  • ‘s $6B investment targets a data center
  • Initial capacity of 100 MW, expandable to 300 MW
  • Nearly 600 construction jobs; up to 175 permanent roles planned
  • Project announcement set for Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit

Another day, another major development from CoreWeave, the Livingston-based AI hyperscaler.

The company is committing up to $6 billion to equip a new, state-of-the-art data center in Lancaster, Pa.

The project will mark one of the first large-scale of its kind in the region. Coreweave will officially announce the effort during the CEO roundtable with President Donald Trump at U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick’s inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh.

“The demand for high-performance AI compute is relentless, and CoreWeave is scaling a cloud purpose-built for AI to meet it and strengthen U.S. leadership,” said Michael Intrator, co-founder, chairman of the board and CEO, of CoreWeave. “This data center will accelerate innovation and drive economic growth across the region.”

Key things to know:

  • Will initially be 100 megawatts with the potential to expand to 300 MW
  • Will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure tailored for advanced AI workloads
  • Will create nearly 600 jobs during construction. When it launches, nearly 70 full-time technical and operational roles are expected. And that number could potentially to scale to 175 over time
  • CoreWeave will be the tenant of the site, which is co-developed by Chirisa Technology Parks and Machine Investment Group. The companies will partner on all facets of workforce recruitment and community engagement
  • Adds to CoreWeave’s growing network of 33 AI data centers

“I’m thrilled to welcome this transformative investment in our great Commonwealth,” said McCormick, a Republican representing Pennsylvania. “I’m deeply grateful to CoreWeave for their tremendous commitment to Pennsylvania’s future.”

Creating Keystone State opportunities

The project hits into the heart of a number of critical issues, which NJBIZ has reported on extensively, that are colliding at once as AI explodes, such as the development of infrastructure, data centers, energy needed and more. It is just the latest example of companies – and states – urgently making big bets and big moves in the AI space.

On April 13, Gov. Phil Murphy and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro visited the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 21 training facility in Philadelphia to tour the innovative center and announce their intention to form an interstate task force to address wage theft and worker misclassification in the two states.

“Pennsylvania is competing again and bringing in billions of dollars in new investment to the Commonwealth to support our technology sector, and CoreWeave’s $6 billion investment will continue to build on that work,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. “With this commitment, CoreWeave is creating opportunities for our workers, generating new revenue for our local communities, and ensuring the future of AI runs right through Pennsylvania.”

Of course, Gov. Phil Murphy has already staked that claim here in Jersey through a number of AI initiatives and investments – and often highlighting CoreWeave as the posterchild for these efforts.

Thus, making this announcement involving Pennsylvania and New Jersey’s CoreWeave especially notable – as the AI arms race continues to ratchet up.

“We look forward to working with leaders like Sen. McCormick and Gov. Shapiro to ensure this investment delivers meaningful, lasting impact,” said Intrator.

The announcement comes on the heels of another from CoreWeave, which NJBIZ reported on – striking a $9 billion deal July 7 to acquire Core Scientific.
