Crate & Barrel is eager to win over former Bed Bath & Beyond customers, by offering them the ability to transfer wedding or baby registries to one with the popular furniture and home décor retailer.

Couples and expectant parents who move their wish lists over will also receive 20% off one item this month as well as complimentary assistance to complete their registries with the same or similar items, according to Crate & Barrel.

To transition, consumers must start a new Crate & Barrel or Crate & Kids registry. Then, they need to take a screenshot of their Bed, Bath & Beyond or Buybuy Baby registry and bring it into a Crate & Barrel store or submit it by text.

Following its April 23 bankruptcy filing, Union-based Bed Bath & Beyond began liquidation sales across its 360 namesake stores and 120 BuyBuy Baby locations nationwide. Managed by Hilco Merchant Resources, Gordon Brothers, Tiger Capital Group and B. Riley, the sales are part of efforts to wind down the struggling chain’s business by the end of June.

According to Bed Bath & Beyond, all registry data is safe and can still be viewed; however, no new lists can be created.

“We expect to partner with an alternative platform where you will be able to transfer your data and complete your registry,” the company wrote in a FAQ. “We are focused on providing updates as quickly as practicable and are working to provide details in the coming days.”

Once the most popular retailer among engaged couples, Bed Bath & Beyond’s wedding registry business slipped in recent years while Amazon and Target pulled ahead.

Back in 2017, Bed Bath & Beyond had the biggest market share of registries among competitors, with a 44% of listing penetration. But by 2022, that figure dropped to 33% as couples increasingly favored gift options that are more versatile, such as cash and honeymoon funds, according to findings from equity research firm Baird.

Crate & Barrel isn’t the only retailer hoping to gain from Bed Bath & Beyond’s bankruptcy.

Although the retailer officially stopped accepting its Big Blue coupons April 26, in order to discount items for closing sales, some of the chain’s competitors have stepped in to honor the vouchers, including Big Lots, Boscov’s, JoAnn Fabric & Craft and The Container Store.
