Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center bested all other New Jersey hospitals in 2024 with 55,360 inpatient discharges, according to data provided to NJBIZ.

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center followed with 45,960 discharges, while HMH’s Jersey Shore University Medical Center secured third place with 43,579. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, and Valley Health System’s Valley Hospital rounded out the top five.

Atlantic Health System and Saint Peter’s Healthcare System signed a Letter of Intent Jan. 31, 2024, establishing a strategic partnership. The systems advanced their merger plans in June 2024 with a definitive agreement. Under this arrangement, Atlantic Health would make investments in Saint Peter’s service area.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset appointed Deirdre Blaus as permanent chief administrative officer April 3, 2025, after she served in an interim role since June. Blaus replaced Patrick Delaney, who became senior vice president and chief operating officer of RWJUH New Brunswick. RWJBarnabas’ Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center ranked sixth on the NJBIZ list.

Cooper University Health Care, which came in at No. 7 for 2024, completed a merger with Cape Regional Health System July 1, 2024, after negotiations and regulatory reviews. Cape Regional Medical Center was renamed Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional.

Virtua Voorhees Hospital, independent Holy Name Medical Center and RWJBarnabas’ Community Medical Center completed the top 10.
