Jersey Mike’s Subs has reached America’s “Last Frontier.”

With the May 24 grand opening of its first restaurant in Alaska, the Manasquan-headquartered sandwich chain hit a major milestone: A presence in all 50 states across the U.S.

Located at 1451 E. Parks Highway in Wasilla – a city about 40 miles north of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley – the new store is the first of three Jersey Mike’s shops planned in Alaska by owner Fred Rosenberg.

This summer, he expects to open locations in South Anchorage and Eagle River, according to Jersey Mike’s.

“We are thrilled to bring A Sub Above to Alaska and open as the 50th state for Jersey Mike’s,” Rosenberg said. “At Jersey Mike’s, our culture is to give back to the communities that we serve and we have partnered with Special Olympics Alaska, Mat-Su Community to raise funds for this very worthy organization. Our goal is to make a positive difference in the communities and neighborhoods that we serve. It is our responsibility as a brand to give for the sole purpose of giving, and not to receive.”

Founded in 1956, Jersey Mike’s started out a small sandwich shop in Point Pleasant and is now one of the fastest growing quick service restaurants in the country, with more than 2,500 locations.

According to the company, California is the state with the most Jersey Mike’s shops (342), followed by Florida (206), Texas (203), North Carolina (184) and New Jersey (130).

The busiest location in the country is in Williston, Vt., while the top-selling sub across all 2,500 stores is the No. 7 turkey & provolone.

While international expansion is “always a consideration” for Jersey Mike’s, a spokesperson told NJBIZ that “the immediate focus is on continuing to grow throughout the U.S.”

In commenting on the brand’s success, Hoyt Jones, president, Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems Inc., said, “From the beginning, we’ve believed in smart growth and our success is driven by franchise owners who are passionate about our brand and giving philosophy.”

Across its footprint, philanthropy remains a priority for Jersey Mike’s, as each store partners with local charitable organizations as a way to give back.

Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the country have raised more than $110 million for charity. Earlier this year, the company raised a record-breaking $21 million for more than 200 nonprofits as part of its 13th annual Month of Giving campaign.
