The Jersey Shore dining scene is getting a sweet upgrade, with Krispy Kreme Inc.‘s impending return to the region after nearly 20 years.

JLL announced May 20 a new lease with the multinational doughnut company and coffeehouse chain covering 4,000 square feet. The former McDonald’s location at 1900 Route 70 in Lakewood comes with a drive-thru window.

The store’s debut is set for fall 2024. At that time, customers will also receive a feast for their eyes. The Lakewood factory-store will include the brand’s “glaze waterfall” and conveyor belt, which carts freshly baked treats through a shiny, sugary shower.

JLL Managing Director David Townes and Vice President Alana Friedman represented the tenant in the transaction. R.J. Brunelli & Co. represented the landlord, Steiner Equities.

It’s just the latest news for Townes and Friedman, underscoring the activity in the retail sector. Last week, the team announced hitting lease up at Denville Commons with the addition of four new tenants.

The Asbury Park Press was the first to report ‘s Jersey Shore return. According to the paper, a different franchisee opened a store on Route 70 in Brick in 2003 that shuttered in 2005.

Townes told the Press that the same franchising group opening the new spot is behind stores in Paramus, Springfield, East Rutherford and Jersey City. He said the client “really wanted to plant a flag at the Jersey Shore.”

In a May 20 statement, he said they were thrilled to bring the doughnut shop back to the beach. “Krispy Kreme is a dynamic addition to Town & Country Shopping Center’s retail experience, which accesses a significant population from its location right off of Route 70,” Townes stated.

Krispy Kreme also has a New Jersey location in East Springfield.

The self-proclaimed “home of the Original Glazed Doughnut” operates in more than 30 counties. It also boasts a growing e-commerce and delivery business.
