At the start of the month, New Jersey American Water launched a three-year, $22 million upgrade project in Linden.

The Camden-based utility company will replace about 7,300 feet of aging water main, starting on Linden Avenue from Pleasant Street to Stiles Street. The work will later move to Pleasant Street, Rebecca Street, Smith Street and Avenue C.

As with similar upgrades across its service areas, NJ American Water will also replace any lead or galvanized customer-owned service line as part of a statewide initiative to remove all such equipment by 2031.

“We are pleased to upgrade this important piece of infrastructure in our Central Operating Region distribution system over the next few years,” Senior Director of Operations Carmen Tierno said in a statement. “This project represents a critical investment for the company in support of our commitment to continue to provide customers with safe, reliable water service.”

J. Fletcher Creamer & Son Inc., the company’s local contractor, expects to complete the first part of the project on Linden Avenue by the end of February 2024. The second and third parts of the project on the remaining streets will take place from November 2024 to February 2025 and November 2025 to February 2026. Customers will be notified before the start of each portion of the project.

Timelines will depend on weather, supply availability and other factors, the company said.

Work in Bay Head

New Jersey American Water also began work in Bay Head earlier this month, an $800,000 investment that will replace approximately 3,000 feet of aging water main along portions of Bridge Avenue from Bay Avenue to Route 35.

The company will also replace fire hydrants and utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route, as well as any lead or galvanized customer-owned service line.

Montana Construction Inc., the company’s local contractor, expects the work to be done within two months. Final street restorations will be completed in spring 2024.
