NJ American Water invests more than $432M on upgrades in 2021

New Jersey American Water invested more than $432 million in system upgrades and improvement projects across its service areas in 2021, the American Water subsidiary announced March 15.

System improvement highlights for last year include:

  • Mains: The company invested $161.5 million to install more than 71 miles of main to replace and rehabilitate aging pipe and install new mains to serve additional areas. In addition, the company invested approximately $3.5 million in leak detection equipment.
  • Source water, treatment and other production system improvements: The Camden-headquartered company spent more than $87.4 million for improvements at its water treatment facilities, including: Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plant, Swimming River Water Treatment Plant, Canal Road Water Treatment Plant, Delaware River Regional Water Treatment Plant, Diamond Hill Station and other facilities around the state.
  • Fire hydrants: NJ American Water replaced 548 fire hydrants and 2,430 valves, an approximately $16.3 million investment.
  • Service lines: The company replaced 9,006 service lines; an investment totaling approximately $31.7 million.
  • Tanks/storage: NJ American Water rehabilitated four water tanks and conducted detailed inspections on 109 tanks, an investment totaling approximately $9.5 million.

All investments are part of NJ American Water’s multimillion dollar program to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that is reaching the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across the state, the company said in a statement.
