The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is reviewing whether former President Donald Trump‘s recent felony convictions make him ineligible to hold liquor licenses at his Garden State golf courses.
According to the state, there are three active liquor licenses for the following locations:
A spokesperson for the AG’s office confirmed to NJBIZ that the state’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is looking into whether Trump’s conviction has an impact on the licenses. The office declined any further comment.
Under state law, liquor licenses cannot be issued to “any person who has been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude.” Applicants must have a reputable character and are expected to operate the licensed business in a reputable manner, according to the law.
“This discretionary concept acknowledges the issuing agency’s authority to consider prior disorderly persons offenses, known organized crime history, or a reasonable belief that the applicant is ‘fronting’ as a licensee for some other undisclosed and usually disqualified person’ when assessing whether to issue/renew a license application,” the ABC said in a handbook for retail licensees.
A spokesperson for the Trump Organization told NJBIZ, “Despite inaccurate reporting, President Trump is not the holder of any liquor license in New Jersey, and he is not an officer or director of any entity that holds a liquor license in New Jersey – or anywhere in the United States for that matter.”
The spokesperson continued, “Any review of our liquor licenses will confirm this. These are some of the most iconic properties in the world, and reports like this do nothing but harm the thousands of hard-working Americans who derive their livelihoods from these spectacular assets.”
A New York jury found Trump guilty last month on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges relate to a $130,000 hush money payment in 2016 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Lawmakers around the state split largely along party lines in their responses to the verdict rendered May 30 by a New York jury finding former President Donald Trump guilty on 34 criminal charges. Click here to read what they said.
Prosecutors said the reimbursements, falsely logged as “legal expenses,” aimed to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election.
The case is the first of Trump’s four indictments to reach trial. Additionally, it is the first criminal case against a former U.S. president.
Trump returns for sentencing July 11; he faces penalties from a fine to four years in prison on each count. Trump has denied all wrongdoing. The former president is expected to file an appeal after sentencing.
