No. 4: Joseph Boccassini

As firmwide managing partner and a member of the executive and compensation committees, Boccassini has guided McCarter & English through several years of growth, with no signs of slowing down. The Newark-based firm closed out 2022 with record total revenues and revenue per lawyer, while profits per equity partner were over $1 million for the second year running.

McCarter & English also expanded its footprint, with the addition of new offices in Indianapolis and Miami making for 12 total locations. Prior to taking on his current role, Boccassini’s practice focused on complex commercial litigation in federal and state courts in New York, New Jersey and Delaware. Now, he’s responsible for managing the firm’s legal practices, advancing its pro bono and diversity programs, and maintaining a “collegial culture.”

As if the firm’s own benchmarks weren’t indicative enough of its success, outside organizations have also recognized McCarter & English’s efforts under Boccassini’s leadership. In May, the National Legal Aid & Defender Association announced the firm as a 2023 Beacon of Justice Award honoree for its commitment to “intentional inclusivity and intersectionality through our LGBTQ+ rights, gender equity, and racial equity work.” The firm has also made some high-profile hires this year: adding a retired state Supreme Court justice to its ranks and its first chief marketing officer in two decades.

Outside of the office, Boccassini serves on the Rutherford Education Foundation board of directors, which advances the academic, athletic and extracurricular experiences of students in Rutherford, and Felician University’s board of regents.
